DISCOVERY BAY, Contra Costa County — October 27, 2026. Safer routes for children, families and pedestrians are the focus of a county transportation project now listed in design. The Timber Point Crosswalk Improvements Project has an estimated $272,000 construction budget and would update pedestrian crossings near Timber Point Elementary School, Slifer Park and Ravenswood Park.
What improvements are proposed?
Contra Costa County’s project page lists ADA-compatible curb ramps, new or refreshed pavement markings, upgraded crosswalks and rectangular rapid-flashing beacons (RRFBs) with appropriate signs. Flashing beacons are intended to increase driver awareness when pedestrians cross, but actual safety performance must be assessed after installation and with attention to local traffic behavior.
How is the project funded?
The county identifies Transportation Development Act funds and Discovery Bay West mitigation funds for the $272,000 estimate. These are proposed sources in the capital program, not an amount already spent on newly installed crossings.
What is the schedule?
The county’s plan anticipates advertisement and bids during spring 2027 and a roughly 20-working-day construction period in summer 2027. Earlier milestones show 35% design plans completed in June 2025 and advancement toward 65% plans in August 2025. No final installed crossing or completed summer 2027 schedule is established as of this article’s publication.
How families can participate
Parents can raise questions about school dismissal conditions, speed, crossing visibility, accessibility and construction detours through county Public Works and their school’s administration. A planned flashing beacon is not a reason for drivers to disregard current crosswalk responsibilities.
